The Ocean City Life-Saving Station Museum will be free for locals and others who just love Ocean City during Locals Appreciation Week.

From Oct. 24-31, the Ocean City Museum Society will host its seventh annual Locals Appreciation Week to bring people together to celebrate their town.

During this week, the society will be offering free admission to the Ocean City Life-Saving Station Museum as well as 10 percent off all gift shop purchases to both locals and visitors who are considering themselves locals for the time being.

“It’s really for anyone who loves Ocean City,” society assistant curator Diane Knuckles said.

A free one-year membership will be awarded, as well, to the winner of the Black Cat Scavenger Hunt, which takes participants across Ocean City to visit other important sites.

Knuckles said the tradition began as a way for the museum and society to give back to people who love Ocean City.

The museum, housed inthe second-oldest building in the resort, seeks to immortalize the history of Ocean City in all aspects.

In 1915, the station joined forces with the Revenue Cutter Service, forming the U.S. Coast Guard station found there today.

This building continued to be used as a Coast Guard station until 1964, when the Coast Guard moved its headquarters.

In 1977, the building was almost demolished because it had fallen into poor shape, but a group of Ocean City resident formed the society and with the help of the Ocean City government, worked to make the museum what it is today.
