Best beach-related mascots that would fit in on Delmarva

We mean no offense to Rodney The Lifeguard, and he's by no means a mascot, but the presence of the Ocean City advertising star got us thinking: What would the best current sports mascots be at our Delmarva beach towns?

Plenty of professional sports teams around the country have mascots that would fit the bill. So here's a list of the 10 best beach-themed mascots from professional sports we could come up with.

Sherman and the Oriole Bird pose for a photo prior to game time between the Delmarva Shorebirds and Hagerstown Suns on Thursday, April 14 at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium in Salisbury.

Sherman the Shorebird

It wouldn't be a Delmarva mascot list without our favorite local bird. Sherman is bright and bubbly. Perfect for the beach.

Stormy

The mascot of the Carolina Hurricanes is a pig in a hockey uniform. Stormy, a nod at weather, always has a smile on his face.

16. It takes a special mascot to change the color scheme of his scales as Billy the Marlin did when the Marlins changed their team colors a few years ago.

Billy the Marlin

Standing 8 feet tall and weighing 250 pounds, Billy is one big fish. Here's to hoping he doesn't find himself caught at the White Marlin Open in August.

Fin the Whale of the Vancouver Canucks runs towards the locker room during Musical Chairs.

Fin the Whale

Our friends in Vancouver, Canada have themselves one cool killer whale representing the Vancouver Canucks of the NHL. On the club's website, Fin's favorite book is listed as Moby Dick. And we can appreciate a whale with that kind of taste.

19. Pirate Parrot benefits from setting his cage inside the best ballpark in the nation, but suffers from being the "other" wacky green mascot in the state of Pennsylvania.

The Pirate Parrot

This pirate helped the Pittsburgh Pirates win the World Series in 1979 in his first year as mascot. Quite the good luck charm.

San Francisco Giants mascot Lou Seal holds up a sign as the Giants host LGBT night during the fourth inning against the Colorado Rockies at AT&T Park.

Lou Seal

Full name: Luigi Francisco Seal, the proud mascot of the San Francisco Giants. Wouldn't mind seeing this beauty sunbathing on our shoreline.

S.J. Sharkie

In 2012, Cartoon Network named S.J. the "Most Awesome Mascot." If sharks were always this awesome and friendly, we'd never have to evacuate the waters.

"Al the Octopus" is taken off a flat bed truck by Olympia Entertainment workers and carried up the steps of the West entrance of Joe Louis Arena in April 2010.

Al the Octopus

Octopi in Detroit? A tradition that started in 1952, when two brothers threw an octopus on the ice to represent the eight wins the Detroit Red Wings needed to win the Stanley Cup that year, helped birth this mascot.

Raymond

The mascot of the Tampa Bay Rays, one would think, is a stingray. Nope. Not this guy. Raymond is officially described as a "seadog." And who wouldn't love that?

The Phillie Phanatic climbs into the stands to joke with this fan who was wearing a Yankee cap before the Phanatic took it away.

Phillie Phanatic

With a good portion of our office from the Philadelphia area, this was always going to be on the list. What's beachy about him? He hails from the Galapagos Islands. And that's good enough for us.

Honorable mention: Suntan and Sunburn, mascots of The Traverse City Beach Bums, an independent league baseball team.
