The weird things they drop on Delmarva to celebrate the New Year

Apparently, you have to drop something to mark the coming of the new year. That’s how they do it in New York City with the famous ball drop, and increasingly, that’s how communities here on Delmarva do it too — with some very strange local twists.

Here’s a list of New Year’s celebrations, only-on-Delmarva style.

They're dropping what?

Connie Parish of Georgia (left) and Marshall P. Muskrat (right) dance in the street to celebrate the night during the annual Muskrat Dive New Year's Eve celebration in downtown Princess Anne.

Muskrat Dive (Princess Anne)

Marshall P. Muskrat will make his famous dive in front of the Washington Inn and Tavern.

Crab Drop (Easton)

The crab will drop at 6 p.m. and midnight on South Harrison Street.

The lighted horseshoe hangs above Robert Reed Park on Chincoteague Island on New Year's Eve before the annual Pony Island Horseshoe Drop on Monday night. Revelers dressed up and came out for the annual event, which is patterned after the Times Square ball drop that is annually televised.

Horseshoe Drop and Costume Promenade (Chincoteague)

Probably a good idea not to drop a pony.

Boat Drop (Cambridge)

An Eastern Shore deadrise boat will take the fall on Poplar Street in Cambridge.

Anchor Drop (Lewes)

In a sign of its plans to stick around for another year, the town drops anchor in the canal at Canalfront Park.

Rockfish Drop (Rock Hall)

The fish drop comes after a hat parade and a lip sync battle.

Dropping of the Crab Pot (Cape Charles)

Before the pot drops, there is a Before the Pot Drops Party.

Beach Ball Drop (Bethany Beach)

Nothing like heading to the beach in late December/early January.

How did they think of that?
