Satisfying a sweet tooth is easy at DoDo Cookie Dough & Ice Cream in Ocean City.

The eatery, located at 11701 Coastal Highway, opened in July 2017 and offers customers a variety of edible cookie dough paired with fresh ice cream. The response to the concept was so positive last summer that this year DoDo will be opening a second location, franchising and shipping its cookie dough nationwide.

“If you’ve never tried our edible cookie dough, I think it’s a must now for Ocean City," said owner Mo Salem.

Salem said the idea of an edible cookie dough shop was something that intrigued him, and he became set on doing it the spring before opening. Months were spent tasting different flavors of cookie dough and making sure the taste was just right.

Opening a location while still perfecting the cookie dough recipe was something DoDo wanted to avoid, Salem said. While some might say July is late in the summer season to open a business, Salem said for DoDo it was just right.

“We wanted to get it right before we opened,” he said.

Salem is also the owner of Shmagel’s Bagels and a licensee of Tony Luke’s Cheesesteak. Both are a part of the 33rd Street Shopping Plaza, where the second location of DoDo will make its home later this summer.

What sets DoDo's cookie dough apart from store bought or homemade cookie dough is its pasteurization process.

“We make our cookie dough so it can be consumed raw,” Salem said.

DoDo has nine core flavors: chocolate chip, snicker doodle, sugar cookie, oatmeal, M&M, peanut butter, cake batter, naked and brownie batter. It also offers a dough of the day flavor, which allows DoDo to crowd-source new flavors.

Recently, the shop released a red velvet flavor that includes cream cheese frosting with white chocolate chips throughout.

All of the cookie dough is made in house. Developing a new flavor can take an entire day of being in the kitchen or longer, Salem said. The ideas for flavors come from the staff and management themselves, or as suggestions from customers.

“Our customers’ suggestions are huge for us because it’s obviously what our customers want," he said.

Customers can order their cookie dough as either a single, double or triple scoop in either a cup or waffle cone.

But, if an entire cup of raw cookie dough sounds too sweet, Salem said it can be paired with one of DoDo's 16 daily flavors of ice cream that is sourced from a local company. Customers can also top their dessert with a variety of topping items.

“We just want to make sure everybody gets the full experience," Salem said.

With the positive response last summer, Salem said DoDo has plenty of plans to give customers more. Upcoming menu expansions include baked cookies and waffle bowls.

Along with the new location at the 33rd Street Shopping Plaza, the business will be launching its website, where fans can purchase cookie dough to be shipped nationwide. DoDo will also begin franchising June 1, with more information on its website.

Salem said the company has already received requests from places like New Orleans, Miami, New York, Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

Salem's other business, Shmagel’s Bagels, will also begin the franchise process at a later date.

For the business owner, a successful dessert shop is just another addition to what he and his staff can offer Ocean City residents and tourists.

“We kind of hit all segments of your day. Between Tony Luke’s, Shmagel’s Bagels and DoDo you can pretty much eat at our concepts at least one of the days that you’re in town," Salem said.
