Halloween events for the family: Sea Witch, Great Delaware Pumpkin Carve and 7 more
It's a dreary start to Halloweekend and there are already cancellations to the spirited fun. But there are still plenty rain-or-shine events to which you can take your costumed kids. Here are 9 suggestions for your weekend.
Sea Witch Halloween & Fiddlers’ Festival: The annual celebration at the beach kicks off Friday night and runs through Sunday. The predicted nor'easter has shuffled some events, moving up the trick-or-treating in Dewey Beach on Friday to run from 5-7 p.m. For the full list of events, plus what's on and what's not, visit www.beach-fun.com. So far, the forecast has caused organizers to cancel
- Entertainment in the Rehoboth Beach bandstand on Friday
- Haunted beach and bonfire in Dewey Beach on Friday
- Sea Witch parade on Saturday
Great Delaware Pumpkin Carve Festival: The first-time event is descending on Quillen Arena at the state fairgrounds in Harrington from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday and from 3 to 9 p.m. Saturday. About 50 gigantic carved gourds will be on display. There are also a bonfire, hayrides, costume contest, trick-or-treat, kids' crafts, bumper cars on ice, seasonal treats and craft brews (ciders and wine, too). Tickets for one day are $7, or $3 for ages 6 to 12; and tickets for both days are $12, or $5 for ages 6 to 12. Check the schedule at www.delawarestatefairgrounds.com for a full list of events.
Cape Henlopen Fantasy Trail: It's the 30th year for this sweet, not scary, Halloween tradition. Costumed kids will walk the trail and meet storybook characters, getting candy and toys along the way. It runs from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Sunday. It's $5 per person. Check out the Cape Henlopen State Parks Facebook page to check for weather-related closures.
Cops & Goblins: A petting zoo, costume contest (12 and younger), treats and more is in store at the Ocean View event from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday at John West Park. The rain date is Sunday, same time and place.
Halloween Spooktacular: Elsmere has weather concerns covered. Its costume parade is at 5 p.m. Saturday and starts at the Town Hall (11 Poplar Ave.), traveling to the Fire Company for trick-or-treating (starts at 5:15) and “Coco." In case of rain, it will start at the Elsmere Fire Company at 5 p.m. for indoor trick-or-treating.
Dia delos Muertos Family Event The Delaware Art Museum (2301 Kentmere Parkway, Wilmington) celebrates from noon-3 p.m. Sunday with themed art activities, performances, a Day of the Dead altar and costumes inspired by “Coco.” The event is free.
Steamin’ Halloween Costumes are encouraged at the annual not-so-spooky celebration from 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sunday at Auburn Heights Preserve (3000 Creek Road) in Yorklyn. A scavenger hunt, games, popcorn, treats and the chance to ride in gas-, electric- and steam-powered automobiles is all part of the day. There's also an 1/8-size Auburn Valley Railroad to hop on. Admission is $8-$19.
Halloween Express Speaking of trains, the Wilmington & Western Railroad's Halloween Express leaves the station (2201 Newport Gap Pike) in Wilmington at 12:30 p.m., 2 and 3:30 p.m. Sunday (reservations necessary; rides often sell out in advance). Take a 1-hour round-trip ride to Mt. Cuba with a friendly witch. Passengers in costume ride for $10. Everyone else's tickets are $12 to $14, and free for children younger than 2.
Halloween Parade & Trick-or-Treat Main Street Newark's annual Halloween events are set for Sunday, starting with the parade at 3 p.m. The parade starts at Tyre Avenue and Main Street, and travels west on Main Street to College Avenue. Costumed kids can trick-or-treat at businesses along Main Street from 3-5 p.m. There is no rain date; call 302-366-7147 for cancellation information.
