What started as a project for Britain's Imperial War Museums has turned into a record-setting movie event.

The World War I documentary "They Shall Not Grow Old" played in theaters on only two days in December, breaking records for its distribution company, Fathom, and netting so much interest that it will hit the big screen one more time. "They Shall Not Grow Old" will play at more than 1,000 theaters on Monday, giving those who missed it Dec. 17 and 27 another chance to see it.

Critics have lauded the documentary and Jackson's restoration and colorization techniques to bring the Great War to life. Hundreds of hours of film from the archives of the Imperial War Museum were used to detail the day-to-day realities of war, including life in the trenches.

Peter Jackson's documentary "They Shall Not Grow Old" did so well on its two release dates in December that it's coming back for screenings on Jan. 21.

The only narration comes from recordings of veterans from the BBC and IWM archives.

"As soon as I saw the restored footage, I saw that what this film does is bring the humanity back to these men," Jackson said in an interview with Time.

The documentary is a major departure for Jackson, the Oscar-winning director of the "Lord of the Rings" series.

The New Zealand-born Jackson, 57, was fascinated with the war that his British grandfather, Sgt. William Jackson (to whom he dedicated the film), fought in. He died 20 years before Jackson was born, leaving no personal account of his experience.

"I have the historical account. He was wounded the first day of the Battle of the Somme and other times. I know where he fought. But I was missing the human element," Jackson says.

The film is rated R and is being shown in 2D and 3D.
