Wilmington St. Patrick's Day parade kicks off weekend of shenanigans

By the time Friday's spring temperatures have dropped back down to the 40s and 50s, it will be too late. Spring fever will be in full effect, and just in time for St. Patrick's Day weekend.

These are some of the biggest parties up and down the state.

PARADES

Whether you’re a little kid who likes dancing leprechauns or a big kid who enjoys a beer with friends, Wilmington’s 44th annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade has you covered. The Irish Culture Club of Delaware’s parade will kick off at noon on Saturday at Fourth and King streets before proceeding north on the green-striped King Street.

There will be short performances at the Grandstand at Rodney Square before concluding at King and 14th streets — the site of the club’s post-parade hooley party where paradegoers celebrate with mugs of beer.

The parade lasts about an hour with the hooley wrapping up by 4. Go to facebook.com/DelawareIrish for complete details.

Dover's parade is at 1 p.m. Saturday down Loockerman Street through the city's downtown.

BAR CRAWL

Milford will go green Saturday when the city hosts its ninth annual Milford St. Patrick’s Day Pub Crawl with a dozen downtown restaurants, bars and merchants taking part.

Kicking off at 6 p.m., you’ll need a “race bib” to participate, costing $25 on the night of the crawl at nine different locations, listed at facebook.com/downtownmilfordinc.

The crawl visits Arena’s Milford, EasySpeak Spirits, La Hacienda Milford, Milford Billiards, Milford Tavern, Mispillion River Brewing and Park Place Restaurant & Lounge.

Also, 11 alcohol vendors (3rd Wave, Dogfish Head, Nassau Valley Vineyards, etc.) will be teamed up with six merchants, including Novel Tea Nook, Milford Antiques & Friends, It’s About Time Clock Repair, My Sister’s Fault, Delaware Branding Company and Lifecycle.

A bus will take crawlers to uptown locations, which will remain open until last call. Downtown merchants will close shop at 9 p.m.

The Starboard in Dewey Beach is one of the most popular nightspots in the state.

DEWEY BEACH GOES LIVE

It doesn't feel like summer yet but it's getting closer. And because Dewey Beach can't resist a good party, they're throwing a couple this weekend.

The Rusty Rudder (113 Dickinson St.) is getting into the spirit with its St. Patty's Day party with Love Seed and Laura Lea & Tripp Fabulous on Saturday.

Sunday at 1 p.m. is 3AM Tokyo. While this four-piece, New York-based cover band plays, it's brunch time. Revelers will get a free breakfast buffet with the purchase of their first drink. The spread will include French toast, waffles, pancakes, eggs, bacon, sausage, corned beef and cabbage and more.

Down the street at The Starboard (2009 Del. 1), the fun started on Thursday. That means plenty of parties and live music over the weekend, with Kristen & Johnny at 3 p.m. Saturday, La Unica Band at 1 p.m. Sunday and Bryen O'Boyle, former Mr. Greengenes frontman, at 4 p.m. Sunday.

IRISH SOCIETY CELEBRATES

This is a big weekend, naturally, at the New Castle County Irish Society's center at 1301 S. Rodney St. in Wilmington.

Saturday is their after-parade party from 1 to 6 p.m. with music by John Kelly from 2 to 6 p.m. There's also a cash bar and food available. Admission is $8-$10.

Sunday is their ham and cabbage lunch and dinner from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. If you're early enough you might be able to snag a corn beef and cabbage platter, but there's a limited number of those and the corn beef sandwiches. There's also a cash bar and performance by the McAleer School of Dance at 4:30 p.m.
