Aubrey Plaza may have lost her first shot at an Emmy Award to co-star Jennifer Coolidge for their smash hit, the HBO drama "The White Lotus,'' but before show host Anthony Anderson had even uttered a word, she was already making headlines.

It may not have surprised anyone that audience darling Coolidge would walk away with the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series statuette for "The White Lotus,'' (she also won an Emmy for her work in the show's first season in 2022), but Plaza's buttercream silk gown inspired more than a few double takes on the red carpet.

According to a Harpers Bazaar feature about Emmy runway fashions, "For her first major award show of the year, the (Plaza) arrived at Los Angeles’s Peacock Theater in a stunning, silky powder-yellow gown from Loewe’s Spring/Summer 2024 ready-to-wear collection — which, quite unexpectedly, was adorned with a giant silver dressmaker pin just above the chest. The oversize accessory was pinned to the bodice, which featured a dramatic square neckline that looked like a folded piece of gown, ready to be completed.

"The skirt of the gown went down to Plaza’s ankles, revealing her chunky golden platform sandals by Alexandre Birman,'' the article continues.

People also praised the Wilmington native and Ursuline Academy grad, who this weekend wrapped up her first off-Broadway run in John Patrick Shanley's successful "Danny and the Deep Blue Sea.'' They awarded Plaza the award for most daring Emmy's red carpet look and proclaimed that the actress, producer and author looked like "a literal pat of butter.''

But you know, in a good way.

Not everyone loved the dress, however. Page Six rounded up some social media comments that compared the gown to a slice of cheese, a bagged lunch and even the Post-it note Carrie Bradshaw got when Berger dumped her.

In addition to nudging out Plaza, Coolidge reigned in this category against her other "The White Lotus'' co-stars Meghann Fahy, Sabrina Impacciatore, and Simona Tabasco, as well as Rhea Seehorn ("Better Call Saul'') and J. Smith Cameron ("Sucession'').

However, the Emmy committee did not completely overlook Plaza. Last weekend, Delaware's Meredith Tucker took home an Emmy Award for her work in casting "The White Lotus.'' Tucker cast Plaza as Harper Spiller in the show.
