Food truck expands Rosenfeld’s Jewish Delicatessen
Corned beef and pastrami lovers rejoice.
Warren Rosenfeld, the man behind Rosenfeld’s Jewish Delicatessen in Ocean City, will soon expand with a food truck.
“I think it’ll unlock a new world of opportunities for us,” he said. “We’ve already received several invitations to appear at local events.”
The truck is sure to feature fan favorites, such as marble rye Reubens, matzo ball soup, toasted bagels with cream cheese and lox, sauerkraut and The Big Macher, a heaping mound of fries topped with chunks of pulled brisket, roasted tomatoes, caramelized onions and melted shredded cheese.
Rosenfeld hopes to debut his roadside Jewish deli by the end of September and plans to tour Wicomico, Worcester and Sussex counties.
Although operating a food truck will be a first for Rosenfeld, he’s no newbie to the industry.
When he was 12 years old, his parents bought a diner in Washington, D.C. Rosenfeld worked there throughout his teens and into his 20s.
“I practically grew up in that restaurant,” he said.
Even when Rosenfeld began practicing law a few blocks away from the diner, he still helped his family when needed.
After an early retirement from his legal work at age 57, Rosenfeld found his new abundance of down time lacked fulfillment.
“I was going crazy,” he said. “It had only been three months, and I just couldn’t handle it. I’ve always had a hard time sitting still.”
Something kept pulling him back to the industry he cherished and he grew up in.
So in spring 2013, Rosenfeld opened Ocean City’s only traditional, kosher-style, Jewish deli on 63rd Street. In the first two years of operation, the deli served 128,000 customers, he said.
Rosenfeld’s Jewish Delicatessen offers traditional Jewish fare along with popular diner meals. Large portions and huge deli sandwiches — available in 8-, 12- and 16-ounce sizes — are the delicatessen’s trademark.
“We’re trying to be authentic in every way, in look and feel of traditional old New York Jewish delis,” Rosenfeld said. “I wanted to do it right.”
Rosenfeld plans to open a second deli location in Sussex County but, for now, he is focused on getting his food truck on the road.
“I am ecstatic for what the future holds,” he said.
