The Band Perry, G.Love, LeAnn Rimes all headed to beaches

Special to The News Journal

Local guitar hero Tom Larsen specializes in the blues, but he is positively giddy about how his new album came out.

SOJA, which includes Delaware native Trevor Young (far right), will perform Aug. 17 at Seacrets in Ocean City, Maryland.

Larsen and his backing band will host a CD release party at Bethany Blues Lewes, located on Del. 1 at Midway, at 8:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 12. Admission is free.

Larsen sent us a copy of the disc, aptly titled “Game Changer.” He told me that after playing his style of funky, upbeat blues music for decades, he really enjoyed the creative process in the recording studio this time around — which included adding elements of hip-hop in both the writing of the songs and also the production process. Congrats, Tom!

Country/pop act The Band Perry will make up its postponed concert at the Freeman Stage at Bayside in Selbyville on Wednesday, Aug. 17. The sold-out show will kick off with a 7:30 p.m. set by local singer-songwriter Melissa Alesi, who was also set to do the opening chores at the scuttled date earlier this summer. Alesi told me the last-minute decision to postpone that show — after a disgruntled patron allegedly threatened an employee at the box office — was the right one.

Wednesday will also see the return of Grammy-nominated reggae group SOJA to the stage of Seacrets in Ocean City ($40). Seaford’s own Trevor Young, who stopped at the beaches for shows with the group earlier this summer, is the group’s guitarist.

G. Love & Special Sauce will play Seacrets on Sunday, Aug. 14 ($20).

The Bottle & Cork in Dewey Beach was the site of one of the best concerts I’ve ever experienced Aug. 4. Up-and-coming British group The Struts rocked the sold-out crowd with its unique mix of influences such as Queen, Jet, Slade and Mott the Hoople.

As we mentioned last week, Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl was seen all over the place during his annual vacation last week, and posed for photos with fans behind the Bottle & Cork on one sunny afternoon. While he did not make an appearance at The Struts’ Dewey show, he did visit them backstage and pose for photos when the group played Washington, D.C.’s 9:30 Club Aug. 13. The Cork will present LeAnn Rimes on Sunday, Aug. 14 ($45), Anders Osborne on Tuesday, Aug. 16 ($25) and Donovan Frankenreiter on Wednesday, Aug. 17 ($25).

This year’s edition of the Ocean 98 Summer Listener Appreciation Party will take place outside at the The Links At Lighthouse Sound in Bishopville, and will feature live music courtesy Baltimore rock act Tripwire. Admission is free, and folks are advised to bring a blanket or chair. There will be games and activities for the kids, and specials on Seacrets Spirits for the adults.
