The holiday season is upon us, and several Christmas-related benefits will take place in Ocean City in coming days.

First up is Trader Lee's 8th Annual Orphans Christmas Benefit Party on the corner of Route 50 and Route 611 in West Ocean City. It will take place Saturday, kicking off at 3 p.m. and running into the wee hours. Live rock 'n' roll will be provided by local favorites, including The Breakers, Lime Green, Old School OC, Dust 'N' Bones and others. The event benefits the St. Francis / St. Josephs Orphans Home; admission is $10 cash plus one unwrapped toy.

Looking ahead a week, a similar annual benefit will take place at the Oasis Bar & Grill in Whaleyville from 3 p.m. to 2 a.m. Friday, Dec. 9. Local radio disc jockey Skip Dixon will host his 12 Bands of Christmas festival with music by Spitfire Gravel, Gateway Project, Kaotic, Four on the Floor, Fun Suckers, Santa's All-Star Band and others. Toy donations will benefit the Children's House by the Sea; we'll have more on this event next week.

In north Ocean City, B.J.'s On the Water will host its annual Christmas party at 6 p.m. on Dec. 7. Music will be provided by Teenage Rust & the Rustettes, and the beneficiary this year will be the Worcester County Humane Society and Kenille's Kupboard. Donations that will be accepted include Purina cat and dog food products, pet toys, 6-inch leashes, heavy duty choker chains, blankets, cleaning supplies — as well as good old cash. Attendees will feast on a buffet dinner, according to owners Madlyn and Bill Carder.

Check out the story in this issue about the free reggae concert taking place at the Dogfish Head brewpub in downtown Rehoboth Beach at 10 p.m. Friday, Dec. 2. Boston-based touring act Mighty Mystic will play songs from its latest album, "The Art of Balance." At 10 p.m. Saturday, Dogfish will present a freebie by New Jersey funk act Dapp.

Last but not least, blues fans are no doubt looking forward to hitting The Globe in Berlin at 7 p.m. Friday for the return of national favorite The Nighthawks ($28, $33). The decades-old band is the subject of a new documentary called "Nighthawks on the Blue Highway," which debuted a few weeks ago at the Alexandria Film Festival in northern Virginia.
