Former 'Voice' contestant coming to OC this weekend

Dogfish Head announces final brewpub shows at original location

Nashville-based country singer Julia Cole will play a free concert at the Rusty Rudder in Dewey Beach at 9 p.m. Friday, April 28.

As the clock ticks closer to the launch of the summer season, the prospects for live music are increasing exponentially.

A lot of the offerings in the coming days and nights are quite special, too.

In downtown Rehoboth Beach, the Dogfish Head brewpub will present music for the last time with a pair of shows this weekend. But fans need not despair, as the business is simply moving into a newly-constructed building right next door. There will, however, be twinges of nostalgia for regulars as they bid adieu to the current location in the days ahead.

On Friday, April 28, Dogfish will present ska group The Snails along with rock act The Hawkeyes. On Saturday, April 29, the final night of music will feature a double-bill of local performers — Nothin' But Trouble with Lower Case Blues. Music will start at 10 p.m. each night and admission is free.

A mellower evening of "bon voyage" sentiments will take place the following weekend. Owners Sam and Mariah Calagione will join with patrons from 7-10 p.m., Sunday, May 7, to enjoy one last night of socializing at the original location (along with tours of the new structure.)

The new Dogfish building will have a soft opening in May, followed by its first music event Friday, June 2, with the Richard Lloyd Group. Lloyd was the guitarist and co-founder of the influential 1970s band Television, which was part of the New York City punk scene. This is indicative that the Calagiones will continue to present off-center music offerings along with their off-center ales.

Nelly's Echo will return to Fager's Island in Ocean City on Friday, April 28. The group's Nelson "Nelly" Emokpae is a former contestant from NBC television's The Voice.

In Dewey Beach, the Rusty Rudder will continue its series of free country concerts at 9 p.m. Friday, April 28. Nashville-based vocalist Julia Cole will play her original, danceable songs including her debut single, "#GetAwesome." A slew of additional shows are in the offing, so keep an eye on www.rudderlive.com.

In Ocean City, Fager's Island will present the return of Nelly's Echo at 9:30 p.m. Friday, April 28. Singer-guitarist Nelson "Nelly" Emokpae received national television exposure a few years ago when he participated in the third season of "The Voice" as part of Christina Aguilera's team.

Looking ahead, the kickoff of Ocean City's annual Springfest event on Thursday, May 4, will including a performance by local oldies favorite The Hubcaps at 7 p.m. ($10). Tickets are long gone for sold-out concerts on Friday, May 5 (Josh Turner) and Saturday, May 6 (Joan Jett & the Blackhearts).
