Costume party? Beach bars got you covered
Watch It Wednesday: Carving Pineapples for Halloween
Halloween is Tuesday, but local nightclubs will get in on the action with costume parties as early as Friday.
In downtown Ocean City, locally-based party rockers City Painted Green will play the costume bash at Pickles Pub at 9:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 27.
The nearby Cowboy Coast Saloon will host its annual Halloween Hoedown on Friday, with doors opening at 7 p.m. DJ BK will provide the soundtrack, and there will be a bull riding contest in addition to a costume contest.
On Saturday, Oct. 28, Fager's Island in Ocean City will have a pair of costume contests for both early birds and night owls. Things kick off at 5 p.m. with the Haunted Island Happy Hour with DJ RobCee. The Jump Off will rock the main stage at 9 p.m., with DJ Hook spinning between sets.
Seacrets will have a nine-hour celebration of its own Saturday. Full Circle will play the tiki bar at 5 p.m., the JJ Rupp Band will follow in the tiki bar at 9 p.m. and Gypsy Wisdom will headline in the Morley Hall nightclub at 10 p.m. The first-place prize, which will be awarded late in the evening, is a trip for two to Jamaica.
On Halloween, Seacrets will present its annual Locals Halloween Party with music by Flowers for Taco.
In West Ocean City, the Sunset Grille's outdoor bar (Teaser's) will host its season-closing party from noon to close Saturday, Oct. 28, and patrons are encouraged to wear costumes. Speaking of the Sunset Grille, the Annual Pink Party there last weekend raised more than $7,000 for cancer research.
In Dewey Beach, the Rusty Rudder's annual Halloween party will feature house band Love Seed Mama Jump at 9:30 p.m. Saturday on the inside stage. (The Rudder will close for the season next weekend with both Kicking Sunrise and Flowers for Taco playing Saturday, Nov. 4.)
Elsewhere in Dewey, The Starboard nightclub will feature a costume party double shot Saturday, Oct. 28, with performances by Freshly Squeezed at 9 p.m. and Kristin & the Noize at 10:30 p.m.
Speaking of Freshly Squeezed — the band will celebrate its 10th anniversary with a full evening of music at The Pond in downtown Rehoboth Beach beginning at 10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 27.
The Pond's Rock 'n' Roll Halloween Party will take place Saturday, Oct. 28, as the staff members dress as various musical icons. Music will be provided by Mama's Black Sheep at 5:30 p.m. and Sweet Leda at 10 p.m. There will be two costume contests — for best group or duo, and also best overall outfit.
Also in Rehoboth, the Dogfish Head brewpub has a free concert set for Friday, Oct. 28. Colorado indie-pop act Dressy Bessy will perform second, following a 10 p.m. set by Split Squad.
Dogfish has hosted Split Squad a couple of times previously; the all-star garage rock group includes members of Blondie, The Plimsouls and The Fleshtones.
Looking ahead, Dogfish will present its yearly Analog-A-Go-Go festival next weekend at both the pub in Rehoboth and the main brewery in Milton. Free shows in Rehoboth include the Legendary Shack Shakers on Friday, Nov. 3, and Waxahatchee on Saturday, Nov. 4. We'll have more information in next week's Frequency column in the Beachcomber.
