Sold-out concerts bringing famous faces to beach stages

Motown legend Smokey Robinson will play a sold-out concert at the Freeman Stage at Bayside in Selbyville on Friday, June 1.

If the Memorial Day weekend was any indication, it should be a banner summer at area beaches. Local venues will provide the musical soundtrack, and many of the concerts in coming days are already sold out.

Local reggae fans are scrambling to find second-hand tickets to the sold-out concert by The Dirty Heads with opening act Pacific Dub at Seacrets in Ocean City on Sunday, June 3.

A Wednesday, June 13, double-bill featuring Matisyahu and Stephen Marley at Seacrets is sold out, as well. However, Matisyahu will also play a solo show at the Freeman Stage at Bayside in Selbyvillle on Thursday, July 26, for which $28 tickets are still available.

Speaking of the Freeman Stage, it will host its first concert of the season on Friday, June 1, when Motown legend Smokey Robinson sings to a sold-out crowd.

Looking ahead to next week, folk-bluegrass favorite Alison Krauss will perform at 7 p.m. Saturday, June 9, with ticket prices ranging from $50 to $110.

Reggae-rock act The Dirty Heads will return to Seacrets in Ocean City to play a sold-out concert on Sunday, June 3.

In Dewey Beach, the Rusty Rudder will host a free concert by Tennessee-based country vocalist Brandon Lay at 8 p.m. Sunday, June 3. The show falls on a night off from Lay’s current summer tour opening for Kenny Chesney in outdoor stadiums. Lay’s new single “Yada, Yada, Yada” follows his previous hit, “Speakers, Bleachers and Preachers.”

The Cowboy Coast Saloon in Ocean City announced this week that national country duo High Valley has been booked to perform Friday, Aug. 24. Ticket details are to be announced, so stay tuned.

In downtown Rehoboth Beach, the Dogfish Head brewpub will present a free show by Brooklyn jam band The Phrygs at 10 p.m. Friday, June 1. The weekend will also include a freebie by Philly world music act Travel Songs at 10 p.m. Saturday, June 2.

Dogfish is celebrating its 36-seat, dog-friendly patio located on part of the space that housed the original brewpub; a new merchandise room has been constructed in front of it facing Rehoboth Avenue.
