Instagram announced a new "mute" feature on Tuesday that will let users hide posts from accounts without unfollowing them, making it easier to control their feeds while navigating those tricky social media relationships.

It's an account feature that Facebook has had for some time, allowing people to tune out political rants or constant selfies without hurting anyone's feelings.

The mute function will be rolled out in coming weeks, Instagram said.

When users tap the "..." menu on an account's post, it will now offer several mute options, including muting posts or muting posts and stories.

"You can also mute posts and stories by pressing and holding on a story in your tray, or from a profile," Instagram said in the announcement.
