There’s a story Steve Crifasi likes to tell about how architect Buck Simpers found just the right spot to design an innovative contemporary home in the rolling hills of Chateau Country.

“He camped out overnight on the property to determine the sunrise and sunset to ensure it was properly sited,” he says.

Mid-century modern home offers leafy private getaway

Simpers designed the house for Marilyn and Michael Uffner, who have owned the house for 31 years. Crifasi recently listed the home for sale for the owners, who are downsizing.

This contemporary home at 3611 Centerville Road in Greenville was designed by architect Buck Simpers and is situated on 6.1 acres.

Sited on 6.1 tranquil acres, the house is a rare example of contemporary architecture, with angled glass ceilings and exposed beams, walls of windows and skylights.

“It’s airy, bright and open, a true contemporary,” Crifasi says.

Marilyn Uffner says she was attracted to the property because of its stunning views and proximity to Wilmington. Simpers’ design provides expansive views from almost every room. The exterior is clad in cedar, recently painted gray, accented with white trim.

There are more than 2,000 square feet of outdoor decks that enhance the home’s connection with the outdoors. The living room is outfitted with a wall of windows and sliding doors that connect to a deck.

A wing on the first floor is designated as a master suite with two spacious walk-in closets with custom built-in storage. The master bath is awash in luxury, with a whirlpool tub, towel warmer and oversized steam shower with seamless glass doors. A skylight ushers in natural light. The suite adjoins a sunroom with a private deck.

She and her husband, the CEO of AutoTeam Delaware, have enjoyed entertaining in their home over the years.

The kitchen 3611 Centerville Road in Greenville has marble counter tops and a glass back splash.

Two years ago, they installed a chef’s kitchen with double ovens, a cooktop and a wine cooler. High-end finishes include marble countertops and a glass backsplash. Sleek, white flat-panel cabinetry with pole hardware is in keeping with the contemporary vibe. A center island provides prep space, storage and casual seating.

They also updated features you can’t see. A five-zone, energy-efficient cooling and heating system features heat pumps with an oil backup system.

ADDITIONAL LIVING SPACE: There’s a lower level appointed for entertaining or guests. There’s a game room, a library, a kitchenette with a wine fridge, and two guest bedrooms, each with a private bath.

HER FAVORITE PLACE IN THE HOUSE: Marilyn Uffner enjoys spending time in the open concept kitchen and family room with a wood-burning fireplace. “It’s extremely comfortable, open and pleasing,” she says.

WHAT SHE WILL MISS MOST ABOUT THE HOUSE: She will take with her fond memories of living in a one-of-a-kind home in a serene setting. “It’s a unique design by a world-class architect,” she says.
