Get two kinds of growlers – 4-legged and bottled – at Delaware brewery's doggy yoga

You can go now go home with two kinds of growlers from Bellefonte Brewing Co. – the four-legged kind and the jugs used to take brewery beer home.

Puppies, yoga and beer will collide Sunday morning in Prices Corner when Doggy Noses & Yoga Poses makes its New Castle County debut.

The upstart yoga company based on a "crazy" idea hatched by a New Jersey mother of two brings yoga to breweries and other spots, pairing the experience with dog rescue groups.

That's right, adoptable puppies and dogs roam freely, licking faces and joining the yoga class with a portion of the proceeds going to a local animal group. And afterward, fresh beer will flow.

Think of it as downward facing dog meets, well, downward facing dogs ... with beer.

"There's usually just a lot of laughing," organizer Debra Furstenberg says. "It's a joyful hour that just brings a lot of happiness."

Doggy Noses & Yoga Poses hosts an event at Crossfit Towson in Towson, Maryland last month benefiting New Castle-based Brandywine Valley SPCA.

After Doggy Noses & Yoga Poses held a pair of events earlier this year at the now-closed 16 Mile Brewing Co. in Georgetown, Furstenberg of Morganville, New Jersey, is crossing the Delaware Memorial Bridge once again to bring her doggie yoga show to Bellefonte Brewing Co. in Prices Corner this weekend.

The $35 tickets sold out instantly, and there's already a growing wait list in case there are cancellations.

But don't despair, dog-lovers. If it goes well — and how can it not, really? — Bellefonte plans on having Furstenberg back soon. She's already in talks with other First State breweries, as well.

What started as a community service project for Furstenberg's daughter Morgan has grown into a full-time job for the dog lover, spawning more than 80 events in seven states since last August.

Morgan wanted to do something to help rescue dogs as part of her work toward earning a black belt in karate, and Furstenberg just happened to hear a report about goat yoga on the radio.

"I thought, 'I don't know about goats, but if I did yoga in a room full of dogs or puppies I'd be so happy,'" she says, sparking her idea for her daughter's fundraiser. "I thought I was insane and my daughter said, 'Yeah, you're crazy, but it would be a blast.'"

Her two stops at 16 Mile Brewing Co. earlier this year benefited the New Castle-based Brandywine Valley SPCA and Sussex County's Doggone Happy Animal Rescue.

Why breweries, you might wonder?

Most are dog-friendly, have plenty of space in their tasting rooms and often already host yoga special events or have yoga programs.

Plus, a cold, fresh beer after a sweaty hour of poses sure hits the spot for some people.

Bellefonte Brewing Co. in Prices Corner already is dog-friendly, especially when co-owner Brandon Walker's pair of rescue Siberian Huskies, named Ghost and Pepper, are in the house.

In the past, the 2½-year-old brewery has hosted adoption events for the Elsmere-area Faithful Friends Animal Society, a nonprofit animal welfare organization and no-kill shelter. It also will provide the dogs for Doggy Noses & Yoga Poses' visit this weekend.

Walker is as curious as anyone about how it will all work out.

"We've had dog events and we've had yoga events, but we've never had them together," he says. "I've personally done yoga before ... I'm not sure how it would work with a dog sniffing you, but we're about to find out."

For Sunday's dog/yoga event, organizers ask that participants keep their own dogs at home, giving the rescue dogs space so they don't get even more overwhelmed. They are already leaving their shelter cages and being dropped into a totally new environment with plenty of strangers.

Doggy Noses & Yoga Poses hosts an event at Black Flag Brewing Company in Columbia, Maryland earlier this month.

And don't worry. There will be a "piddle patrol" on duty because there's always the possibility that one of the furry friends might get a little too excited.

"We have a whole procedure," says Furstenberg, who formerly worked in operations for several banks and brokerages on Wall Street in New York.

The Doggy Noses & Yoga Poses event comes just ahead of its first cat yoga event, which will feature a group of lovable kittens sauntering around yoga mats.

Cat yoga will be held Saturday, Nov. 24 at 10 a.m. at the Hockessin Police Athletic League (7259 Lancaster Pike, Hockessin) with tickets costing $5, and preregistration is required. Call (302) 239-8861 to join the group, which is recommended for ages 10 and older. (A caregiver must accompany children ages 14 and younger.)

"We're always looking for ways to enhance the animal/human bond," says Jane Pierantozzi, executive director of Faithful Friends Animal Society, which will receive some of the proceeds of doggie yoga. "People are more likely to adopt when they see the animals in a more natural environment — something other than a shelter cage."
