Beer on ice! Wilmington's newly reopened Riverfront Rink now offers suds

Wilmington's Riverfront Rink is now open for the season and is offering beer for the first time.

There will be beer.

For its fifth season, the Riverfront Rink in Wilmington is introducing cold brews for those 21 and older. Draft beers now cost $7 at the outdoor, open-air rink on the Christina River.

On a recent weekend it offered both Dos Equis and Allagash.

Even though the temperature hasn’t been regularly dipping below freezing quite yet, ice skating began on Wilmington’s Riverfront last weekend.

The Riverfront Rink had its Saturday skate canceled last weekend due to rain and organizers hope this weekend will be their first full weekend of skating this season.

The new beer offering goes along with hot chocolate and snacks, which will also be for sale.

Food from their neighbors, Del Pez Mexican Gastropub, will be available in the warming tent on Thursdays through Sundays.

The rink is open Monday through Thursday 4-9 p.m., Friday 4-10 p.m., Saturday 11 a.m.-10 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m.-9 p.m.

Amy Watson Bish and Andrew Truscott skate at the Riverfront Rink in Wilmington last year.

It costs $8.50 for adults and $5.50 for those 12 and under. Skate rentals are $5. The rink only accepts credit cards and gift cards — no cash.

The rink, 308 Justison St., will remain open until March 4. That's when it is taken away and replaced with the Constitution Yards Beer Garden for spring and summer.

The $350,000 Riverfront Rink, which was obtained from Longwood Gardens, first opened in the winter of 2014. It was brought to the city by the Riverfront Development Corp. of Delaware, a group formed in 1995 to spur economic growth in the area.
