Here's why Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson weren't at the Emmy Awards

Engaged couple Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson canoodle on the carpet at the VMAs.

Unlike the MTV Video Music Awards in August, there was no Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson PDA at the Emmy Awards Monday.

Although Davidson, who is part of the winning "Saturday Night Live" crew, was expected to attend with his fiancee, the couple were no-shows for a serious reason.

Grande's rep told People Tuesday that the singer was taking time to heal after the death of her ex-boyfriend rapper Mac Miller, who died of an apparent drug overdose only 10 days prior to the Emmys.

“Contrary to reports, Ariana will not be attending the Emmys tonight. Pete has also opted to not attend to be with her in New York," the statement read. “Given the events of the past couple of years, Ariana is going to take some much needed time to heal and mend. She will be staying close to home and using this period to spend time with her loved ones and work on new music without deadline. She thanks her fans for their understanding.”

Despite previously speaking about their "toxic" relationship and Miller's substance abuse problems, Grande alluded to happy times they had during their two years as a couple in a tribute post to the late rapper Friday.

Miller was featured on Grande's breakout 2013 track "The Way," beginning a successful working relationship. The two took things to the next level and started a romantic relationship in 2016, with Grande appearing on Miller's "The Divine Feminine" single "My Favorite Part" in the same year.
