The 2016 Delaware farmers markets are open for business

The annual seasonal farmers market season is just starting to sprout up, but before grabbing your shopping bag, check out our day-by-day list.

There are new days, new hours, new vendors and even new locations at many of the markets which have become more popular than ever. Last year, markets had record sales of more than $3 million.

“There’s a tremendous amount of interest in local foods and buying direct from farmers,” says Daniel F. Shortridge of the state Department of Agriculture. “People are really intrigued by the option of meeting and talking with the farmer who grew the sweet corn or strawberries that will end up on your table - and they’re guaranteed to be fresh.”

One of the biggest shifts for the 2016 season is that the Historic Lewes Farmers’ Market has changed sites.

For the past 10 years, the market, one of the most popular Saturday shopping destinations for produce in the state, has been held at the Lewes Historical Society in downtown Lewes.

But, this season, it has been moved to a new location, while the complex undergoes a grounds improvement project. It will take at least a year.

The new market site is George H.P. Smith Park, near Beebe Hospital, at Johnson and Dupont avenues in Lewes. The market opened as scheduled on May 14, but, due to heavy rain, it was held temporarily at the Shields School parking lot.

The Lewes market at George H.P. Smith Park has about 35 vendors. It opens on Saturdays - rain or shine - at 8 a.m. and runs through Nov. 19. Check the Historical Lewes Farmers Market Facebook page for updates.

In Dover, Capital Farmers’ Market, formerly known as Loockerman Way, kicks off its weekly Wednesday market on June 15. It’s held from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Loockerman Way Plaza.

According to Shortridge, it is the first market that is a location for the Summer Food Service Program (http://www.doe.k12.de.us/Page/2790), partnering with the Department of Education.

The Georgetown Farmers’ Market at 16 Mile Brewery begins May 25 and runs through Aug. 3. A new vendor this year is Old World Breads, an artisanal bread bakery in Lewes.

Other changes: The Milton Farmers’ Market is now operating solely on the grounds of Dogfish Head Brewery, and new markets this year include one in Centreville; outside Lewes, at Garden Shack Farm; and at Nassau Valley Vineyards, near Lewes.

Shortridge says there also are more than 80 farmstands where consumers can also buy a wide variety of local foods. These range from retail stores to small roadside stands with honor boxes, and offer the same fresh produce and other farm products from local family farmers.
