Rehoboth Beach welcomes Twist Juice Bar

Julie Harrigan followed her dreams to open Twist Juice Bar in Rehoboth Beach.

It took Julie Harrigan about three years to realize she chose the wrong career.

She joined the corporate world after graduating from the University of Delaware, and hated it.

"I was miserable," she said. "I was 22 years old but I felt like I was 40. I didn't want 'that' to be my life."

So she quit.

She used her savings to travel and examine her life, concluding that good, healthy food was something that always made her happy. She moved back to Delaware, landed a job at Stingray in Rehoboth Beach and fell in love with the area, the people and Mike Zygmonski, in particular.

When Zygmonski, now the wine director and sommelier for SoDel Concepts, decided to move to New York for training, she followed. Harrigan got a job at one of New York's most popular juice bars, acquiring vital knowledge of the industry and getting hooked on the green juice movement in the process.

When the couple came home for good, things had changed. Harrigan finally knew what she wanted to do.

She began making her own juices, selling the colorful concoctions at farmers markets and local eateries, all the while, building her business plan and scooping out ideal locations.

She finally pulled the trigger, and opened her own shop — Twist Juice Bar — in Rehoboth Beach's bustling First Street Station, located directly across from BodyShop Fitness Center.

She modeled the space to resemble popular juice bars of New York, using a sleek, simple design featuring a custom-made wood counter, an array of leafy plants and fresh produce to add a few pops of color.

Unique to Twist is cold-pressed juice. Harrigan claims the technique provides superior taste and health benefits in comparison to centrifugal juicers.

"The juice never touches a blade so friction and oxidation never occur," she said. "All the vitamins, minerals, and living enzymes remain intact, providing you with juice that is as nutritious and delicious as eating the fruit or vegetable itself."

Cold-pressed juices have no water or sugar added and have a shelf life of up to 5 days.

Twist offers a variety of flavors with colorful names like, thai me up, the grass is always greener, and between the sheets, which is made with beet, carrot, apple, lemon, ginger, ginseng.

The Rehoboth Beach shop also offers nutritionally blended smoothies, as well as acai bowls, wheat grass shots, raw vegan snacks, gluten free kale caesars, homemade granola and an organic wheat bread, banana and almond butter "sammich" for the kids.

A variety of cleanse packages are also available, for the introductory, beginner, intermediate and advanced green juicer.

"Whether you're just getting started or you're a rejuvenated-pro, we have a cleanse that is right for you," she said. "And we are more than happy to answer any questions about how to get the most out each of them."

As Harrigan settles into her first summer season, she has no doubt that she made the right decision, to walk away from the corporate world and follow her heart.

"I'm happy," she said, smiling.
