Little Lewes sandwich shop offers big flavors

Olive & Oats by Azafran is tucked into a tiny space at 113 Market St. in Lewes. But don't let the size fool you.

The flavors are big and bold.

Olive & Oats by Azafran is a cute little sandwich shop in Lewes.

The cozy site was once home to Half Full (it's now on Second Street) and, for a brief time, Patty's. Olive & Oats, open since last spring, marks a return of Azafran to Lewes. The restaurant had formerly occupied another building nearby, which is now Bushi Sushi.

Two colleagues and I were in Lewes recently and were directed to Olive & Oats by Azafran by a local resident. He is such a fan of the breakfast and lunch eatery, he literally walked us over to the cafe and waited until we took a seat at one of the tables.

The smoked salmon BLT ($11) at Olive & Oats by Azafran in Lewes is made with local Old World Breads.

The cafe offers soups, platters, dips, a cheese board, salads and sandwiches. All sandwiches are made with bread from the locally-owned Old World Breads.

Our favorites include the Cafe Panini, ($10) a crunchy, toasty sandwich topped with Spanish Serrano ham, olive tapenade, marinated goat cheese and fresh basil. Another best bet is the smoked salmon BLT with red onion and saffron aioli ($11). Fresh brewed iced tea is $2.

Olive & Oats by Azafran is open daily at 8 a.m. Lunch is served from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Call (302) 313-4701 or visit www.cafeazafran.com
