Tom Schanno, of Halethorpe, Md., holds up his Delaware record golden tilefish. The fish weighed more than 46 pounds.

A Maryland man caught the Delaware state record golden tilefish in the Delaware Sport Fishing Tournament in August, officials have confirmed.

Tom Schanno, of Halethorpe, fought the 46-pound, 8-ounce fish for 20 minutes, the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control said in a news release on Friday. The fish was 47 inches long, with a girth of 29 inches.

Schanno caught the tilefish 62 nautical miles from the Indian River Inlet in the Baltimore Canyon, using a 5-ounce chartreuse and silver butterfly jig at a depth of 530 feet, DNREC said.

The angler's catch was weighed at Hook'em and Cook'em in Rehoboth.

The golden tilefish, a deepwater offshore species, has only been recognized by the sport fishing tournament once since 2010, DNREC said.
