Greenville rector builds style around few great pieces

Eileen Smith Dallabrida, Special to The News Journal

WHO: The Rev. Stephen Setzer, 31, of Wilmington, associate rector at Christ Church in Greenville.

WHY: He was nominated by Roi Barnard, who says: “Stephen is a super guy, very handsome and a savvy dresser. He has a natural instinct for choosing simple, classic outfits that always look great on him.”

HIS STYLE: The minimalist man. “I don’t think you need lots and lots of clothes, just some great pieces that work together. I gravitate toward darker colors. And, of course, I wear a lot of collars.”

The Rev. Stephen Setzer wears a full-length black cassock with long sleeves by R.J. Toomey and black leather wingtip shoes from Ben Sherman.

WHERE HE SHOPS: J.Crew, Banana Republic and DSW.

HOW HE SHOPS: “I don’t enjoy shopping so I only shop when I actually need something. Typically, I shop once a year and wear my clothes until they wear down or I get tired of them.”

FASHION ICON: The actor Benedict Cumberbatch.  “My wife has a crush on him so I’m a little bit threatened.”

FAVORITE DESIGNER LABEL: Ralph Lauren.

BEST CELEBRITY HAIR: “Jesus, of course.”

MOST RECENT PURCHASE: Sweaters from J.Crew.

OLDEST ITEM IN HIS CLOSET: “A plaid western wool jacket that someone from my old church gave me. She got it at a thrift shop in west Texas. It’s more than 50 years old and fantastic.”

GROOMING TIPS: “I am connected to my beard. I just bought some beard balm and a brush. It’s important to keep facial hair in check.”

WORTH THE SPLURGE: “A good pair of jeans.”

NOT WORTH THE SPLURGE: Socks.

WISH I HADN’T BOUGHT IT: Jeans from Abercrombie & Fitch. “I tried to reclaim the Abercrombie days of my youth. But the jeans were all wrong for me.”

GO-TO OUTFIT ON SATURDAY NIGHT: “Double up on denim, roll up my jeans and put my boots on, then throw on my Texas jacket. Western, with a touch of hipster.”

ORGANIZATION TIPS: “Simplify. You don’t need a lot of clothes, just things that make sense over time.”
