Jimmy's expanding to Rehoboth Beach

A restaurant that has gained popularity in eastern and western Sussex County throughout the years is expanding to a third location near Rehoboth Beach.

Jimmy's Grille, with locations in Bridgeville and Dewey Beach, is expected to open next to Outlet Liquors on Route 1 in the early summer, according to owner Alex Pires.

The Rehoboth-Lewes area is one that has been untapped, he said, and the concept —one he described as like a diner with modest prices — is one he believes the area is lacking.

Jimmy's, known for its fried chicken and comfort food, places an emphasis on food made from scratch, Pires said.

Throughout the years — Jimmy's has been in Bridgeville for nearly 25 years and Dewey Beach for about seven — he has learned the more Jimmy's tells its customers about its food and recipes, the better sales are, he said.

"We think there's a big future for food where people know exactly what's in it. Very few do," he said. "Our menu tells you what's in everything and where it came from."

Much like its Bridgeville location, Pires said the Rehoboth Beach spot will provide a full menu. The location will also feature a retail shop similar to Cracker Barrel in nature, but with local products, he said.

The target price for sandwiches is $7-$9, while for entrees, it's $12-$14, Pires said, adding there will be specials offered for under $10.

"You can avoid having a car depending on where you live. You can live inexpensively," he said. (But) you got to eat three times a day. Our idea is we'll be the place that is modestly priced."

Work has begun to construct the restaurant, Pires said. He hopes to hire a staff of about 40-50 starting in two months.

The restaurant will have a small stage for entertainment, with potential for acoustic acts and what Pires described as light, soft background music.

Pires is not the only Dewey Beach restaurateur broadening his reach. Starboard and Bethany Blues owner Steve Montgomery has purchased Nick's Fish House in Baltimore, according to a post on the restaurant's Facebook page. Montgomery did not return calls seeking comment.
