A second medical marijuana dispensary is set to open soon on Maryland's Eastern Shore as the new industry sparks to life.

Positive Energy, based in West Ocean City, received final approval Thursday from the Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission. The board approved a dozen dispensaries during the meeting, bringing the statewide total to 22.

The company plans to open in mid- to late-January, said Lyndsey Odachowski, the general manager. In the meantime, the business needs to learn the state's software and prepare for its first shipment of product.

A message on its Facebook page cheered the Cannabis Commission's decision.

"We are extremely grateful to have received final approval from the Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission (on Thursday), and Positive Energy is now fully licensed to dispense medical cannabis!" it said.

The distinction of being the Shore's first dispensary went to Peninsula Alternative Health on Snow Hill Road in Salisbury. After opening exclusively to pre-registered patients, the business, which is not affiliated with Peninsula Regional Medical Center, opened to the public Wednesday, Dec. 13.

Positive Energy has set up shop on Jerry Mack Road, just south of Route 50.

To obtain medical marijuana, people must first register with the state cannabis commission and receive a recommendation from a doctor or other medical professional.
