The race for New Castle County executive is getting a Republican — and he's a county employee.

Barry Nahe, chief of county Building Operations and Maintenance, filed paperwork with state election officials last week. Repeated phone calls to Nahe were not returned.

He will face the winner of the Democratic primary in September between incumbent Thomas P. Gordon and challenger Matt Meyer.

Gordon is running for an unprecedented fourth term. Wilmington attorney Matt Meyer has filed to challenge Gordon in the primary.

County Executive Thomas P. Gordon.

The race for New Castle County Council president also grew last week. Former New Castle County employee David Roberts filed to run against Karen Hartley-Nagle and current Council President Pro Tempore Penrose Hollins. All three are Democrats.

Each of the incumbent New Castle County councilmen up for re-election have filed to retain their seats. They are Councilmen George Smiley, John Cartier, Timothy Sheldon, Jea Street, David Tackett and Bill Bell. All are Democrats, and nobody has filed to challenge any of the incumbents.

Primaries are scheduled for Sept. 13. The general election is Nov. 8.
