Gov. Jack Markell is shown at the Wednesday opening of new waterslides at Killens Pond State Park.

State environmental officials opened two new spiral and two speed water slides at Killens Pond State Park on Wednesday.

The new slides are twice as high as ones they replaced and mark the first major improvements at the state park near Felton since the water park opened in 1996. The previous slides were removed in 2014 amid safety concerns..

The work is part of a four-phase master plan for the pool area. This first phase, which started in December, cost $3.7 million.

The park will be closed Thursday while contractors put the finishing touches on the newly upgraded water feature. The water park reopens at 11 a.m. on Friday, said Carol Riggs, a spokeswoman for the state environmental agency.
