Residents review preliminary conceptual plans for the development of Brandywine Country Club during a public meeting Dec. 10 at Brandywine High School in Wilmington.

The public will have a chance next month to see plans for the redevelopment of Brandywine Country Club.

A meeting has been scheduled for April 4 at the Concord High School Auditorium at 6:30 p.m. for those behind the development plans to discuss their intent to build mostly homes and apartments on the 111-acre property, according to County Councilman Bob Weiner, who represents the area.

The 18-hole course opened more than 70 years ago, but it could not survive a national downturn in the country club business and closed in 2015.

Later that year, Louis Capano III, who owns the property, held a community meeting to pitch a 554-unit home and apartment development for the land, which sits between Concord Pike and Shipley Road in Brandywine Hundred.

Several local golf courses are threatened by development of subdivisions. One such course, Brandywine Country Club, closed in 2015.

John Tracey, Capano's attorney, said the updated plans remain "almost exclusively" residential. Apartments are planned for club property adjacent to Concord Square Shopping Center and Delaware Law School. The redevelopment will also include attached homes as well as single family residences on both small and large lots, Tracey wrote in a message distributed by Weiner.

A planned interconnection between Shipley Road and Concord Pike will remain as part of the plan, and a portion of the Concord Square Shopping Center's retail space would be removed to facilitate the connection.

The meeting will be the next step in the early phases of developing the property. No plans have been submitted to county government.
