RadioShack has closed more than 1,000 stores nationwide, including its Salisbury location, as the electronics retailer struggles to compete with online retailers.

The RadioShack in the College Square strip mall has closed.

Sheets of paper taped to the inside of the windows at the former College Avenue store state, "Sorry, this location is no longer open." The notices direct customers to a remaining location in Easton and to the company's website, RadioShack.com.

The company has said it will only have 72 company-owned stores remaining by Thursday, June 1.

The chain held a giant liquidation sale over the Memorial Day weekend "before we close the stores for good," it said in a statement. Also remaining are about 500 dealer-owned stores.

In March, RadioShack's parent, General Wireless Operations, filed for bankruptcy protection and proposed closing only about 200 RadioShack stores. Now, the remaining company-owned stores will include only seven states, with the greatest concentration in New York, Pennsylvania and RadioShack's native Texas.

The two remaining company-owned Maryland locations are in Frederick and Bethesda.
