Don't throw those Christmas trees in trash — recycle

Delmarva Now Staff Report
A sign directs people to where they can safely dispose of their Christmas trees.

The holidays are over and it's time to bring down those Christmas trees. But don't throw them in trash to end up in landfills.

There are recycling options all across Delmarva.

Worcester County

The Solid Waste Division of Worcester County will host its annual collection of Christmas trees through Jan. 31.

Area residents can drop off Christmas trees at the Central Landfill in Newark and the Berlin, Pocomoke, and Snow Hill Homeowners Convenience Centers at no cost.

Businesses and organizations that sold trees will not be permitted to drop off trees at the convenience centers, but may take them to the Central Landfill where applicable tipping fees will be assessed.

The trees will be ground into mulch for use at the Central Landfill. For more information, contact Recycling Coordinator Mike McClung at 410-632-3177.

Sussex County

Delawareans are being urged to give their recycling spirit a boost after the holiday season by delivering their Christmas trees to one of many yard waste recycling facilities located throughout the state.

Christmas trees are no longer accepted for recycling at any of DNREC’s Delaware State Parks.

Residents can bring their trees until Jan. 28, but should contact a facility beforehand for specific hours and details.

Trees will not be accepted from commercial haulers or tree vendors without prior approval. Artificial decorations, including hooks, wire, tinsel and ornaments, as well as wood and metal tree stands, must be removed from all trees before dropping them off for recycling.

Christmas trees will be accepted free of charge for recycling from Delaware residents at these facilities in Sussex County.
