Traffic alert: Upcoming road work projects in Delaware

Beam replacement on the new Del. 141 bridge tops this week’s projects that will cause the most headaches for Delaware drivers.

Five projects are highlighted below.

NEW CASTLE COUNTY

Ramp interchange project will require nighttime lane closures on I-95 north and I-295 north in Newport

Beam placement for the new Del. 141 bridge will require lane closures and travel delays.

Traffic on I-295 north will shift to I-95 north on the following dates and times:

  • 8 p.m. Monday until 5 a.m. Tuesday
  • 8 p.m. Tuesday until 5 a.m. Wednesday

I-95 north will be reduced to just the two left lanes and the contractor will be shifting I-295 north traffic to I-95 north between Exit 5 and past the Del. 141 north interchange before it will merge again with I-295 north via the temporary crossover. The Del. 141 south ramp (Exit 2) to I-295 north will be also closed during this time period.

Detour routes:

I-295 north motorists will use the right lane marked for I-95 north and stay in the right lane of I-95, and then use the temporary crossover just past the work zone to go back onto I-295 north.

Del. 141 south to I-295 north motorists should follow detour signs to make a right on Commons Boulevard, a right onto Churchmans Road, a left onto Del. 1/7 south, and merge onto I-95 north.

I-95 north will shift to I-295 north on the following dates and times:

  • 8 p.m. Wednesday until 5 a.m. Thursday
  • 8 p.m. Thursday until 5 a.m. Friday 
  • 9 p.m. Friday until 10 a.m. Saturday

All I-95 north lanes will be closing and shifting to I-295 north between Exit 5 and past the Del. 141 north interchange before merging again with I-95 north via the temporary crossover. The Del. 141 north ramp (Exit 3A) to I-95 north and Del. 141 south ramp (Exit 3A) to I-95 north will also be closed during this time period.

Detour routes:

  • I-95 north motorists will use the right lanes marked for I-295 north and stay in the left lane of I-295, and then use the temporary crossover just past the work zone to go back onto I-95 north.
  • Del. 141 north to I-95 north motorists should follow detour signs and make a left on Commons Boulevard, a right onto Churchmans Road, a left onto state Route 1/7 south, and merge onto I-95 north.
  • Del. 141 south to I-95 north motorists should follow detour signs to make a right on Commons Boulevard, a right onto Churchmans Road, a left onto state Route 1/7 south, and merge onto I-95 north.

Detour signs will be posted for motorists.

Daytime and nighttime lane closures for bridge inspections in Wilmington

Bridge inspections in Wilmington will cause daytime and nighttime lane and/or shoulder closures.

Daytime lane and shoulder work will occur from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.

Bridge over I-95 on Harvey Road, Wilmington

  • Monday: Alternating right lane and left lane closures on I-95 north between Silverside Road and Darley Road. The Exit 10 off-ramp will remain open at all times during this work.
  • Tuesday: Alternating right lane and left lane closures on I-95 south between Silverside Road and Darley Road. The I-95 south off-ramp will remain open at all times during this work.

Nighttime lane and/or shoulder closures will occur from 9 p.m. until 5 a.m.

Bridge over I-495 north on I-95 north and Exit 11/Naamans Road, Wilmington

Bridge over I-95 on Philadelphia Pike/Market Street, Wilmington

  • Wednesday: There will be alternating left lane and right shoulder closures on I-495 north between Exit 5 and I-95. The left lane will be closed first. The Exit 5 off-ramp and on-ramp will remain open at all times during this work. Intermittent ramp closures will occur on I-95 north at Exit 11 off-ramp to Naamans Road between midnight and 5 a.m. These closures will last no longer than 10 minutes and traffic will be allowed to completely clear prior to initiating the next closure.
  • Thursday: There will be alternating right and left lane closures on I-495 south from I-95 to Myrtle Avenue. The right lane will be closed first, including a ramp restriction from the entrance ramp from Route 13 north/Philadelphia Pike. Merging traffic from Philadelphia Pike will be shifted within the work zone to accommodate the inspection work. The Exit 5 off-ramp and on-ramp will remain open at all times during this work.

KENT COUNTY

Temporary closure of median crossover on Del. 1 at Northeast Front Street in Milford

WHEN: Monday through April 24

WHERE: Median crossover closed at Northeast Front Street between Del. 1 north and south, Milford.

WHAT: Widening Del. 1 in the area of the Northeast Front Street crossover, resulting in an eight-day/24-hour closure of the interior Del. 1 lane in both the north and south directions in the area of Northeast Front Street.

Additionally, the crossover at the Northeast Front Street and state Route 1 intersection will be closed during this time frame.

Variable message boards and detour signage will be posted for motorists.

SUSSEX COUNTY

Pavement and rehabilitation project will require daytime lane closures on Del. 1 in Dewey Beach

WHEN: 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, pending weather.

Weekends from 7 a.m. until 6 p.m., pending weather.

The work is anticipated to be completed by May 18, pending weather.

WHERE: Del. 1 north/south from Bedford Street to Savages Ditch Road, Dewey Beach

WHAT: Milling, installing rumble strips, drainage work, and hot-mix overlaying along Del. 1 north and south.

Flaggers will be on site to direct motorists.

Inspection of the Del. 1 Charles W. Cullen Bridge over the Indian River Inlet north of Bethany Beach will take place the weeks of April 16, April 23 and April 30. The bridge is shown here during the May  6, 2012, dedication.

Inspection of Charles W. Cullen Bridge will require daytime lane/shoulder closures on Del. 1 in Dewey Beach

Inspection of the Charles W. Cullen Bridge over the Indian River Inlet will continue this week and the weeks of April 23 and April 30.

Lane and shoulder closures will occur this week and the week of April 23.

  • Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. until 7 p.m.

The north right shoulder will be closed; the south right lane and shoulder will be closed with detour routes for pedestrians and cyclists.

  • Fridays from 7 a.m. until 3 p.m.

The north right shoulder will be closed; the south right lane and shoulder will be closed with detour routes for pedestrians/cyclists.

The inspection work will require a detour of the sidewalk on the east side of the bridge. The detour will direct pedestrians and bicycle traffic to an alternate route over the bridge that uses the north right shoulder.

In addition to the sidewalk detour, the right shoulder on the south side of the structure will be closed. To provide adequate space for use by bicycle traffic, the right lane south will be closed and cyclists will be directed to use this lane.
