As thousands of people flood the Delaware State Fairgrounds for 10 days of rides, food and fun, a small team of food inspectors is checking to make sure all that fried food does not come with any side servings of mold.

Inspectors with the state Division of Public Health spent Wednesday and Thursday visiting as many of the 88 food vendors at the fair as possible, checking to make sure food was being properly and safely stored, that vendors had hand soap and sanitizer and that no employees were coughing on the French fries. 

More than a dozen vendors were found to have violations before the start of the fair, most of which were corrected by the time the public arrived. Violations ranged from no hand soap on-site or too weak sanitizer to food being stored at improper temperatures.

Public health officials have shared initial and follow-up inspection reports with The News Journal. Members of the public visiting the fair also can ask each individual vendor to share its inspection report. There are also three locations at the fairgrounds where people can fill out complaint cards if they observe any problems that could lead to foodborne illnesses, such as serving undercooked meats.

Dragon Breath failed inspection but allowed to reopen

One vendor, Dragon Breath, was found to have numerous violations during inspections. As of Friday, after followup inspections, the vendor, which is listed under the fair's frozen drinks and treats vendors, was permitted to reopen.
