With a victory in the Democratic primary on Thursday, Sherry Dorsey Walker is all but guaranteed to be the next person to represent the House district that comprises much of Wilmington's west side.

No Republican filed to run in the heavily Democratic district, though a write-in campaign or a late filing is theoretically possible for the November general election. The winner will replace the retiring Rep. Helene Keeley, who had held the seat since 1996.

Dorsey Walker is a former Wilmington City councilwoman and was the runner-up for lieutenant governor during the 2016 Democratic primary. She has said she was running for the General Assembly to maintain "the same level of dedication and commitment to the community" that had been shown by Keeley.

"That was the main reason why I decided to take the leap, to continue the great work she’s already established in the district," she said.

Little money was spent on the campaign by Dorsey Walker or her two opponents, Jim Miller, the director of publications for Out & About Magazine, and Paul Falkowski, a teacher.

Dorsey Walker earned more than 68 percent of the Democratic vote. Miller garnered 24 percent, and Falkowski had 7 percent.
