Delaware City's annual fireworks show, usually held in July, has been rescheduled for this coming Sunday, Oct 7.

Delaware City Day, where the fireworks typically make their appearance, was rained out this year, making it impossible to hold the pyrotechnics display, City Manager Carol Houck said.

The event usually attracts thousands and the city is gearing up for a big show, though it's impossible to tell how many people will show up. The fireworks usually last about 30 minutes.

"We don't know what to expect, because this has never happened before," Houck said. "It's a big deal for our community, of course.

"It looks like we're going to have nice weather, so it could just be a nice night out for people. It's a way to switch things up in the fall."

Some residents lobbied for the show to be held on Saturday, which is the annual Rivertowns Festival and has free shuttles between Historical New Castle and Delaware City. The city council eventually settled on Sunday, Houck said, because Monday is Columbus Day and at least a few people may have off.

With that in mind, the fireworks will be shot off at dusk, or about 7 p.m., with prime viewing at Battery Park in the city's downtown.

Parking restrictions will go into effect at 5 p.m. and include:

  • No parking on Clinton Street from Second Street to the circle at Battery Park. Violators will be towed.
  • Washington Street at Front Street will be closed to vehicles until one hour after the fireworks have ended.

Those who are disabled can park in the lot adjacent to the Delaware City Fire Company, where a shuttle will start running at 4 p.m. and keep going until one hour after the fireworks have ended.
