Schools, government offices and courts opening late or closed due to winter weather

Schools and state offices are opening late or closed on Monday due to hazardous weather conditions and icy roads. 

A winter weather advisory is now in effect until noon on Tuesday for northern Delaware, according to the National Weather Service. It is in effect until 9 a.m. this morning for southern Delaware.

Additional snow accumulations of 1 to 3 inches are predicted, with a light glaze of ice. Winds gusts may reach 35 miles per hour near the coast on Tuesday. 

Drivers should plan on slippery roads both today and tomorrow. 

Here's what else you need to know: 

School delays and closings

All Delaware State University locations are closed. The last shuttle from campus left at 9 a.m. 

The University of Delaware opened at 10 a.m., as did Delaware Technical Community College's Terry Campus in Dover. 

Del Tech's Stanton Campus is opening at 11 a.m. The Wilmington Campus opened on time. 

The following school districts and charter schools will be closed for the day:

  • New Castle County Vo-Tech School District
  • Newark Charter School

  • Wilmington Montessori School 

Government delays and closings

  • Due to icy conditions on the roadways, State of Delaware offices in New Castle County will open at 10 a.m. Non-essential employees who live or work in NCCo do not report until 10 a.m.
  •  Essential employees are to report as scheduled.
  • State court facilities in New Castle County will open at 10 a.m., excluding Justice of the Peace Court 11. 
  • City of Wilmington offices will open at 10 a.m. Employees should report at that time with the exception of essential employees, who should report at their regular time.
  • New Castle County offices and facilities are also opening at 10 a.m. this morning. 
  • The city of Newark's offices are now closed. Tonight's City Council meeting has been canceled. 

Travel advisories

The following travel advisories are now in effect: 

  • I-495: The speed limit has been reduced to 55 miles per hour. Use caution. 

Tips for driving in snow/ice:

AAA MidAtlantic has the following tips for driving in the snow and ice: 

  • Remove all snow from vehicle, including roof, hood, and trunk. 
  • Slow down. 
  • Do not tailgate.
  • Never use cruise control on slippery roads.
  • Avoid unnecessary lane changes.
  • Minimize the need to brake on ice. 
  • Give road crews plenty of room to do their job safely.
  • Slow down and move over when you see police, EMS and roadside assistance teams helping motorists on the side of the road.
