Service for Verizon customers on the East Coast has been restored, the phone and internet company tweeted.

By 9:45 a.m., service had been fully restored to all affected customers, David Weissmann, public relations manager for Verizon's North East market, told The New Jersey Record.

By 10:45, customers were beginning to report that their service had returned.

Customers who are still having problems sending and receiving text messages are being asked to restart their phones and other devices.

"The issue has been fully resolved," Weissmann said. "Anybody that was affected by this issue, it should be fully resolved at this time."

Verizon outage

Social media reports of the outage first surfaced at about 5 a.m.

Verizon did not provide an estimate for how long it would take to repair the problem or how widespread the text outage was, but was working to resolve customers' concerns.

On Twitter, Verizon users reported outages in several other states, including Alabama and Oklahoma.

Verizon recommended periodically restarting devices, but did not specifically say it would fix the problem. Customer service said that the issue could be resolved "at any time."

"We have a ton of customers that are being effected (sic) by this, and we're working non-stop to get this matter resolved promptly," Verizon customer service said on Twitter.

Customers frustrated with the outage threatened to cancel their service. On Twitter, they called for the company to resolve the issue immediately.

"The Verizon outage right now is showing how dependent we all are on technology," one person tweeted

Down Detector, a website that tracks service and power outages, had a map with reported service outages. It showed a huge swath of the East Coast being affected, as well as the Chicago area, Indianapolis, Nashville, Atlanta and more.
