A 21-year-old woman was arrested Friday after police said she stole and burned a "thin blue line" flag along Del. 1 north of Lewes.

The Wilmington woman pulled over her truck into the left shoulder close to the median where the flag was flying near Nassau Bridge, Sgt. Richard Bratz of Delaware State Police said.

Catherine Iocco, 21 of Wilmington, faces charges of theft and criminal mischief and other related traffic charges.

A witness called police when they saw her reach for the flag, take it down, and bring it back to her car. The bystander provided her truck description and tag number, Bratz said.

The "thin blue line" is a symbol that supports law enforcement, particularly as a way of remembering police officers who have died.

Officers linked the truck to Catherine Iocco and found her in Milton, Bratz said. Iocco told police she could not return the flag because she burned it.

The flag owner told police the flag was up to commemorate the passing of the Delaware State Trooper William F. Matt, who recently died.

Iocco was  arrested and charged with theft, criminal mischief and other related traffic charges.

She was arraigned and released on $275 unsecured bond.
