A Georgetown man was charged with his seventh DUI Saturday after getting into a single-car crash, State Police said.

Felix Robledo, 52, ran his 2003 Toyota Camry into the ditch on Beach Highway, east of Blacksmith Shop Road, in Greenwood about 10:30 p.m., police said.

When troopers arrived, they could smell alcohol. They determined Robledo was impaired, according to a press release.

The Georgetown man has six prior convictions for driving under the influence, police said. On Saturday, he was also charged with failing to have proof of insurance and driving too fast for the road conditions.

He was committed to the Sussex Correctional Institution in lieu of $22,000 secured bail.

The dangers of drunk driving

Every day, 29 people in the United States die in crashes with drunk drivers, according to the Centers for Disease Control. That is one death every 50 minutes.

After about two alcoholic drinks, the average driver can expect to experience some loss of judgment, visual declines and more, though still below the legal blood alcohol limit.

By the time your blood alcohol content is at 0.08 percent, about four drinks in, you can expect poor muscle coordination, problems concentrating, difficulty controlling your speed and impaired perception.

Whenever your social plans involve alcohol and/or drugs, make plans so that you don’t have to drive while impaired.

For example:

  • Before drinking, designate a non-drinking driver when with a group.
  • Don’t let your friends drive impaired.
  • If you have been drinking or using drugs, get a ride home, use a rideshare service or call a taxi.
  • If you’re hosting a party where alcohol will be served, remind your guests to plan ahead and designate their sober driver; offer alcohol-free beverages, and make sure all guests leave with a sober driver.
