Heavy rain and gusty winds whipped through Delaware Monday, canceling after-school activities and causing power outages that closed schools early in the day.

A power outage early Monday morning canceled classes at Cab Calloway School of the Arts and Brandywine Springs School, according to the school website. Cooke Elementary opened late due to a power outage.

The Charter School of Wilmington, which shares a building with Cab Calloway, also dismissed early.

The announcement for Brandywine School District was posted online around 9:15 a.m. Monday announcing the closure of Cab Calloway and notification was made to parents. The power outage was affecting the entire building, according to the school.

Cab Calloway was scheduled for a half-day schedule Monday for midterm exams, according to the school website.

Transportation for students was provided.

Indian River School District also canceled all after-school and evening activities for Monday, including the Board of Education meeting at the high school scheduled for Monday night, due to the inclement weather.

The board meeting has been rescheduled for 7 p.m. on Jan. 30 at Indian River High School.

Red Clay Consolidated School District also canceled all after-school activities because of the weather.

The high winds and periods of heavy rain were affecting most of the state Monday morning, making for a soggy commute and downed trees and powerlines.

Delmarva Power reported a few outages in the city of Wilmington, the most severe being the one that included the school building. This outage, which was first reported about 8 a.m., affected an estimated 400 people, according to the power company.

Other outages in New Castle County were less significant, though winds were expected to remain gusty throughout the day. Delaware may see gusts up to 50 miles per hour, according to the National Weather Service.

The rain is also expected to last until late Tuesday.
