UDairy Creamery the best ice cream shop in Delaware?

Editor's note: This story has been updated to make clear that while the creamery's ice cream base is processed in New Jersey, the ice cream itself is made locally.

"We are very proud of the fact that we use our own milk to make the ice cream produced in our store and want to be sure our customers understand that while the ice cream base is currently processed off-site, we are using our own milk. And that all the freezing and flavoring takes place on-site in our store," UDair'ys operations manager Jennifer Rodammer said.

UDairy Creamery, which just opened a storefront in downtown Wilmington, is hands down the best ice cream shop in Delaware, Reader's Digest says.

People gather and enjoy free ice cream at the grand opening of UDairy Creamery Market, the UD-run ice cream shop's new location on Market Street in Wilmington.

The general-interest family magazine doesn't say how it came to that conclusion but lists the "best" ice cream shop in all 50 states.

This is what it has to say about the creamery:

"Managed by three and run by more than 50 University of Delaware students, the UDairy Creamery attracts students and visitors alike. The ice cream base is processed in New Jersey and made with the milk from the University of Delaware cows. The base is then shipped back and flavored, frozen, and packaged by UD students at the creamery's storefront location in Newark. Some flavors brim with school pride like Blue Hen Tracks (vanilla ice cream with mini peanut butter cups, fudge swirl, and blue and yellow sprinkles) while others are a little more out of the box, like Zest Fest (orange zest infused ice cream with cashews and chocolate chunks)."

Other hit ice cream shops include The Charmery, within walking distance of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland; Klavon's Ice Cream Parlor in Pittsburgh, Maryland; and Van Dyk's Homemade Ice Cream in Ridgewood, New Jersey.

UDairy Creamery's flagship store in Newark has been open to the public since April 2011 and serves over 34 rotating ice cream flavors year-round, "from the cow to the cone." The shop in Wilmington also offers a rotating assortment of flavors, as well as hamburgers, gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches, salads and fresh produce.
