The bureau defines a micropolitan as an area consisting of at least "one urban cluster of at least 10,000 but less than 50,000 population." It also considers close counties that have a high integration with the core recognized through commuting ties.

Data shows that in April 2020, the Seaford micro area, which matches the boundaries of Sussex County, had an estimated population of 237,375. In July 2023, the population grew to 263,509.

Other micro areas on the list include Anderson Creek, North Carolina; Cookeville, Tennessee; and Clewiston, Florida.

The Seaford area's 2.9% growth ranked seventh among the fastest-growing micropolitans.
