Sussex theater to debut new original production

The Bethany Area Repertory Theater is set to premiere its latest production, "An Affair to Forget" at the Dickens Parlour Theatre.

The play, written by the group's resident playwright, Bob Davis, is the final part of a trilogy of comedies featuring the Tomlinson family during different holiday celebrations.

While the trilogy's first two plays — "We Gather Together" and "Good King Succotash" — revolve around the family's Thanksgiving and Christmas, respectively, "An Affair to Forget" features a July 4 wedding.

The six-show run takes place April 21-23 and 28-30. Shows start at 7:30 p.m.

The play follows what Davis calls a dysfunctional family through their relationships. Anything that could possibly go wrong at the wedding does, he said.

"This isn’t just theater," Davis said. "This is what happens in a lot of families and it’s very funny."

The play is directed by first-time director Veronica Bona. She has been in BART plays in the past — including the trilogy's first two shows — and Davis said the group tries to get people involved in all aspects of the theater.

Bona is excited to make her directorial debut and believes there's something for everyone in "An Affair to Forget."

"You've got in-laws and outlaws and everybody in this world should feel connected to a part of this play," she said. "It takes you out of reality and into hilarity."

"An Affair to Forget" is the penultimate show of BART's off-season offerings before the summer. The season concludes with a production of Stephen Sondheim's "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum" in June.
