Fenwick Wine Cellars hopes to expand its tasting options and hire more workers for the business in the coming years.

Selbyville just got one step closer to getting a new distillery.

At the Sussex County Planning and Zoning meeting on Feb. 23, the board voted 4-0 to approve recommendation of the distillery to the Sussex County Council.

Kim Hoey Stevenson, the newest member of the Sussex County Planing and Zoning commission, abstained from the vote because she was not present at the Feb. 9 meeting when Keith Properties, Inc., a real estate company in Selbyville, brought forth the idea to the council.

The space which the distillery will occupy is in the former space of a winery, located at 38016 Fenwick Shoals Blvd. in Selbyville. That winery, now Salted Vines Vineyard and Winery, moved to Frankford in November.

Salted Vines Vineyard and Winery recently opened in Frankford, Delaware.

Planning and Zoning member Douglas Hudson said it was already zoned before to be a winery and store, making the distillery appropriate for the site.

He added it will be regulated by the Delaware Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission.

"The distillery will occupy much of the space occupied by the former winery," he said, "and will use much of the same equipment associated with the winery."

The distillery also would not have any impact on surrounding roadways or properties, he said.

The Sussex County Council will hold a second hearing to determine whether or not they approve of the distillery, with a date to be determined.
