Maryland man rescued when car crashes into ditch

Roxana and Millville volunteer fire companies and Sussex County EMS responded when an Edgewater, Maryland man ran his car into an irrigation ditch off Bayard Road in Sussex County Wednesday.

A Maryland man was pinned when his vehicle plunged from the roadway into a 9-foot deep ditch Wednesday afternoon, authorities said.

Thomas W. Antonielli, 81 of Edgewater was driving his 2012 Fiat northbound on Bayard Road in Frankford when he veered off the roadway into an agricultural irrigation ditch, according to Delaware State Police spokesman Master Cpl. Gary Fournier. 

The crash occurred near the intersection with Wilgus Cemetery road at about 12:40 p.m., officials said.

Antonielli was transported to Beebe Medical Center, where he was treated for non life-threatening injuries, Fournier said.

A dog that was traveling in Antonielli's car was transported by Animal Control to Savannah Animal Hospital where it was treated for facial injuries, Fournier said.

Police cited Antonielli for failure to remain in a single lane.
