Andy West from Harrington makes a castle as The 38th Annual Rehoboth Beach-Dewey Beach Chamber of Commerce Sandcastle Contest was held on Saturday, Sept. 10, 2016 at a new location on the south end of the beach near Funland under hot weather conditions. Participants worked to create different castles and sculptures in the sand for judging in the late afternoon at which time trophy's ail be given out.

For decades, many have enjoyed the summer pastime of building sandcastles on the beach.

These creations commonly pop up on the beach during days of rough surf or overcast weather, often sculpted by beachgoers of all abilities.

On Saturday, Step. 9, men, women, teens and children of all ages are invited to Rehoboth Beach to celebrate its 39th annual Sandcastle Contest.

Rehoboth-Dewey Chamber Event Coordinator, Emily Grothey explains what you can expect on competition day.

This contest is in its 39th year. Had the Chamber of Commerce predicted it would become a traditional event of this magnitude and how far would you like to see it continue?

Events that are fun and involve family are typically the ones that succeed over time.  We hope we can always offer this event – we see no end in sight!

Who can participate in the contest?

All ages are welcome to register. However, children under 14 must be accompanied by an adult when registering for the competition. The Chamber encourages young participants to enter, but asks that parents provide minimal assistance.

Teams are also welcome and there is no limit on the number of people on each team.  You cannot, however, be on multiple teams. Make sure to register your entry from 8:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. with a member of the Chamber.

Students from the Mariner Middle School near Milton got together to make a viking as The 38th Annual Rehoboth Beach-Dewey Beach Chamber of Commerce Sandcastle Contest was held on Saturday, Sept. 10, 2016 at a new location on the south end of the beach near Funland under hot weather conditions. Participants worked to create different castles and sculptures in the sand for judging in the late afternoon at which time trophy's ail be given out.

What are some truly outrageously created sand sculptures that you have seen over the years?

We have seen sand sculptures of igloos, snowmen, a pool table, dinosaurs, a minion, the State of Delaware, a person sitting in a chair watching TV.

Are there any restrictions on themes?

Sculpture subject matter is left to the artists’ imagination, however the Chamber advises the avoidance of political/controversial themes.

Any tips to beginners to help keep their castle sturdy?

Make sure you don’t use too much water, sometimes people bring their own spray bottles to mist water on their creations. Contestants are only allowed to use water to keep their sculptures wet, no sticky substances.

Also, beginners can take advantage of the free lesson with Darrell O’Connor on Friday night on Sept. 8. The lesson is held on the beach at Rehoboth Avenue and the boardwalk from 5-7 p.m.

What are some key rules to abide by besides no sticky substances?

The sand sculptures must contain only objects natural to the beach (shells, stones, seaweed, etc.).  The piles of sand must be used with manpower only, meaning no mechanical assistance of any kind. Sculptures can begin any time during the day of competition, but conclude at 3 p.m.

What type of prizes will be awarded?

Winners will receive a trophy.  The judges will choose one winner in the business category, 10 winners in the youth category, and 10 winners in the adult category. There is also a People’s Choice category where the spectators will vote for their favorite Adult and Youth sculpture; a trophy will be given to one adult and one youth.

An octopus sits on the sand during a previous Rehoboth Beach contest.

A total of 23 trophies will be given out.  Kids in our “Smiley” category (ages 6 and younger) that register and participate in the contest will receive a shark water shooter toy.
