The Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control announced Wednesday that stretches of ocean beach at Cape Henlopen State Park will reopen Labor Day weekend.

The beaches between Gordons Pond and Herring Point and along the ocean side of The Point on Cape Henlopen had been closed for the beach-nesting bird season, the divisions of Parks & Recreation and Fish & Wildlife said in a statement.

These areas will reopen Sept. 1. The beach will be accessible for the Labor Day holiday weekend and for fall surf fishing.

The areas were closed March 1 to protect the threatened and endangered beach nesters and migratory shorebirds, including red knots, piping plovers, oystercatchers, least terns and other species.

The bay side of the Point will remain closed until Oct. 1 to give refuge to the many species of migratory birds that pass through Delaware on their way south to overwintering grounds.
