Dewey Beach has made its selection for a new town manager.

At the Dewey Beach Town Commissioners meeting on Saturday, the commission selected Scott Koenig to be their new town manager by a 5-0 vote.

"His credentials are remarkable, and we look forward to sharing his credentials when we advance through the process," said T.J. Redefer, Dewey Beach mayor, at the Saturday meeting.

The town will now begin the contract process to bring Koenig to the town, Redefer said.

There were 25 applicants for the position, who were narrowed down to four. Two of those accepted interviews.

"We gave specific direction on how we wanted it to go, and it didn’t quite go that way because of the candidates that presented themselves," Redefer said. "There was a wide variety of candidates that presented themselves, I believe it was about 25 who presented themselves for the job. Some were not qualified and some had amazing qualifications."

The move for a new town manager comes after controversy surrounded former Dewey Town Manager Marc Appelbaum, who left his post during the fall.

Appelbaum had been faced with allegations of racism, sexual harassment and misuse of authority, creating an outcry that united would-be commissioners in the town's recent election.

According to the Dewey Beach website, the posting for the town manager's position was listed on Dec. 28 last year.
