Jack F. "Jay" Owens will assume the role of Indian River School District assistant superintendent July 1, 2018.

The Indian River School District has named its new assistant superintendent.

At a special Indian River Board of Education meeting Feb. 21, the district named Jack F. "Jay" Owens as the new assistant superintendent effective July 1, 2018.

"I am honored to be selected as the Indian River School District's assistant superintendent," Owens said in a release. "I hope to live up to the standard of the many fine administrators who have held this position in the past. I look forward to working with Superintendent Mark Steele and the district’s staff to provide the best possible educational services to our children. It is my goal to have Indian River remain at the forefront of public education in the State of Delaware.”

Owens is a 1996 graduate of Sussex Central High School and has been an educator in the district for 18 years.

Owens fills the post vacated by Steele in January 2017. Steele was selected to be the district's new superintendent after then-Superintendent Susan Bunting was named Delaware Secretary of Education.

Owens is currently the district's director of student services. Prior to holding that position, he was director of special services from 2016 to 2017 and director of assessment and accountability from July 2014 to June 2016.

Prior to joining the district staff, Owens was principal of Sussex Central High School from January 2011 until June 2014. Between 2006 and 2009, Owens served stints as assistant principal at Sussex Central High School, North Georgetown Elementary School and the Howard T. Ennis School.
