Benjamin Mitchell started his first shift at the Rehoboth Beach Police Department 30 years ago as a detective and retired this March as a sergeant, according to a news release.

“We want to thank him for his unending service and tireless commitment to serving his community,” Chief Keith Banks said.

Sergeant Benjamin Mitchell of Rehoboth Beach Police Department retired in March after 30 years of service.

In 2002, Mitchell was promoted to the rank of sergeant. He said he saw many changes and progress in law enforcement during his time serving Rehoboth Beach.

“What I’ll miss most is spending time with the good people I’ve worked with through the years,” said Mitchell.

But the sergeant's retirement won't preclude him from being active in the community.

Mitchell started a police athletic league in 1989. The league, which included a wrestling team, co-ed basketball and flag football grew into the Henlopen Hammers Wrestling Club, which Mitchell still runs.

This fall and winter, Mitchell will work with 302Sports.com to produce and announce high school athletic events throughout the state.

“I’m looking forward to relaxing with my wife, Kristen, and son Trey," Mitchell said. "After years of shift work I will be home for dinner every night with my family.”
